Bridges, highways and interchanges

Transportation

*We build and rehabilitate the bridges, interchanges and roadways that carry freight and commuters across the Pacific Northwest. Most of our DOT work is delivered under traffic, on windows measured in hours.

Overview

How we build for transportation owners

Transportation work is where Halvorsen Pike started in 1987, and it still accounts for roughly 45 percent of our annual volume. We self-perform the structural work that controls the critical path: drilled shafts, cofferdams, footings, columns, bent caps, girder erection, deck placement and barrier. When the schedule depends on a crane pick or a deck pour, our own crews and our own equipment fleet are the ones doing it.

Our superintendents have staged more than 120 bridge and interchange projects in live corridors. We build the traffic management plan alongside the construction schedule, not after it, and we coordinate closure windows, detours and haul routes with the owner, local jurisdictions, emergency services and freight operators before the first barrier is set.

The work is governed by AASHTO LRFD, state DOT standard specifications and, on federally funded projects, FHWA requirements including Buy America, Davis-Bacon prevailing wage and DBE participation. Our in-house quality program, documented under ISO 9001:2015, carries those requirements into daily inspection and test records the owner can audit.

Owner priorities

What matters on these projects

  1. 01

    Staying inside federal-aid compliance

Buy America certifications, DBE commitments, Davis-Bacon payroll reporting and LPA oversight are tracked by a dedicated compliance coordinator, so a federally funded job does not become a federal audit finding.

  2. 02

    Minimizing public disruption

Detours, nighttime closures and staged traffic switches are planned with the owner and incident-response teams, with lane-rental and liquidated-damage exposure priced into the schedule from the start.

  3. 03

    Protecting in-water work windows

Fish-window restrictions, turbidity limits and Section 404 and HPA conditions drive our means and methods for cofferdams, shaft installation and temporary work trestles.

  4. 04

    Designing for service life

Precast and prestressed elements, epoxy-coated and stainless reinforcement, and verified concrete mixes reduce lifecycle maintenance cost for structures expected to last 75 years or more.
