About us
Founded in 1987 by Gunnar Pike and Ingrid Halvorsen, and employee-owned since 2011.
Our story
Two engineers, one dump truck and a bridge deck
Gunnar Pike and Ingrid Halvorsen started the company in a rented shop in Vancouver, Washington, with a single dump truck and a contract to rebuild a county bridge deck. They were both civil engineers who had grown tired of seeing good designs built badly, and they believed that a contractor who employed its own crews would deliver better results than one who only managed subcontractors.
Nearly four decades later, that idea is still how we work. Halvorsen Pike now employs about 640 people at peak season, operates one of the Northwest's largest heavy civil equipment fleets and builds projects up to $150 million. In 2011 the founders sold the company to its employees through an ESOP, and ownership remains with the people who do the work.
