Highway & Roadway Construction

Overview

What we deliver

Our highway division builds and reconstructs freeways, arterials and interchanges throughout the region. We handle the full roadway scope: clearing, mass excavation, drainage, retaining walls, subgrade, aggregate base, asphalt and concrete paving, signing, striping, illumination and ITS conduit. Because we own our trucks, paving trains and grading equipment, we control production and cost on the largest line items.

Building under traffic

Most of our highway projects keep traffic moving. We develop staged traffic control plans with the owner, perform nighttime and weekend closures when required, and use movable barrier, crash cushions and queue-warning systems to keep both workers and the public safe. Our traffic control supervisors are ATSSA-certified and our project managers have lane-rental experience on high-volume corridors.

Paving and structures

We place more than 150,000 tons of hot mix asphalt in a typical season, using material transfer vehicles and intelligent compaction to achieve consistent density. Concrete paving, ramp reconstruction and mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls are performed by crews that have worked together for more than a decade. Retaining walls, noise walls and drainage structures are built in-house to keep interfaces clean.

Quality control is performed by our own certified technicians, with test results posted to the owner within 24 hours.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

01 Can you build while traffic stays open?
Yes, and it is how most of our highway work is done. We design the construction staging and traffic control with the owner, and we keep the same number of lanes open during peak periods unless the contract allows closures.
02 Do you produce your own asphalt?
We purchase mix from local plants under approved mix designs and haul it with our own fleet. This keeps us flexible on location and ensures consistent quality from the plant to the roadway.
03 How do you control smoothness?
We use machine-controlled grading, intelligent compaction and inertial profiling during construction, not just at final acceptance, so problems are corrected while the paving train is still on site.
04 Are you prequalified with the state DOTs?
Yes. We are prequalified with the Washington, Oregon and Idaho departments of transportation, as well as with numerous county and city agencies. Documentation is available on our prequalification page.
