Bridge Construction & Rehabilitation

Overview

What we deliver

Bridges are the work that built this company. Halvorsen Pike has constructed or rehabilitated 84 structures ranging from 40-foot box girder overpasses to 1,100-foot, multi-span river crossings. Our crews perform drilled shafts, cofferdams, footings, columns, bent caps, falsework and formwork, girder erection, deck placement, barrier and approach slabs with our own forces. Subcontractors are used for specialty work only.

Foundations and in-water work

Most bridge risk sits below grade or below the waterline. We install drilled shafts up to 10 feet in diameter and 140 feet deep with slurry or casing methods, and driven pile foundations using impact and vibratory hammers. For in-water footings we design and build sheet-pile and steel cofferdams, working inside agency fish windows and turbidity limits. Temporary work trestles and barge-mounted cranes let us keep equipment out of the channel.

Shaft integrity is verified by crosshole sonic logging and thermal integrity profiling, with results shared with the owner's geotechnical engineer as they are received.

Superstructure and rehabilitation

We erect precast prestressed concrete girders, steel plate girders and post-tensioned box girders using crawler and truck cranes up to 500 tons. Deck placement is planned around cure-temperature limits and finishing crews we have worked with for years, resulting in ride quality that comfortably meets state DOT smoothness incentives.

On rehabilitation work, our crews perform hydrodemolition, partial and full-depth deck repair, bearing replacement, expansion-joint upgrades, steel repair and seismic retrofits including column jacketing, isolation bearings and restrainers. We stage this work behind traffic and have delivered several rehabilitation projects with full-width closures limited to weekend windows.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

01 Can you work inside a fish window?
Yes. In-water work is scheduled from the permit conditions backward. We have completed cofferdam installation, shaft drilling and footing work inside restricted windows of fewer than 90 days on several projects, using work trestles and containment to keep turbidity within limits.
02 Do you self-perform the foundations?
We do. We own and operate drilled shaft rigs, vibratory hammers and the cranes needed for casing and cage placement. Owning the equipment gives us control over production rates and schedule.
03 How do you handle accelerated bridge construction?
We have built precast substructure, full-depth deck panels and lateral slide-in bridges. We participate in design reviews early so that connections, tolerances and lifting weights are buildable and the closure window holds.
04 What bridge sizes do you take on?
Most of our bridge projects run between $5 million and $25 million, and we take on larger structures too: our bonding covers a single project up to $150 million.
