Concrete Structures & Foundations

Overview

What we deliver

Concrete is the common thread across everything we build. We place more than 120,000 cubic yards a year with our own forming, rebar and finishing crews, using batch plants we have qualified and mix designs tested before the first placement. Our carpenters are NCCER-trained and our ironworkers are apprentice-graduated.

Liquid-containing and mass concrete

Tanks, basins and reservoirs require leak-tight concrete. We detail and construct to ACI 350 and ACI 372, controlling joints, waterstops and crack widths, and we test with water before backfill. Mass concrete placements, such as pier footings and thick base slabs, follow thermal control plans with embedded temperature sensors and insulation or cooling as needed.

Formwork and reinforcement

We design and build formwork systems ranging from gang forms and slip forms to climbing forms for tall walls and columns. Rebar is fabricated and tagged from shop drawings, placed to tight tolerances and inspected before every pour. We also use couplers, headed bars and, where specified, stainless or epoxy-coated reinforcement.

Quality control is built into daily practice: slump, air, temperature and cylinder testing by our own certified technicians, with early-age strength results used to schedule form stripping and post-tensioning.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

01 Do you have your own forming and rebar crews?
Yes. Carpenters, ironworkers and finishers are Halvorsen Pike employees, many with 15 or more years of tenure. We subcontract only for specialty work such as post-tensioning stressing or architectural finishes.
02 How do you control cracking in water-retaining structures?
We follow ACI 350 detailing, control pour sequences and joint spacing, limit temperature differentials, cure aggressively and test before backfill. Any leaks are repaired with materials approved by the engineer.
03 Can you handle mass pours?
Yes. We prepare thermal control plans and monitor core temperatures in real time. Our largest single placement was 3,800 cubic yards in 36 hours for a bridge pier footing.
04 Do you build precast structures?
We erect precast tanks, vaults, box culverts and bridge elements. We coordinate fabrication, shipping and crane lifts so the structures are installed to tolerance on the first attempt.
