2.4 Million Hours: What Our Safety Numbers Look Like

Article

Halvorsen Pike employees worked 2.4 million hours in the last reporting period with a total recordable incident rate (TRIR) of 0.91, a days away, restricted or transferred (DART) rate of 0.42 and an experience modification rate (EMR) of 0.68. All three numbers are well below the industry averages for heavy and civil engineering construction.

Numbers are the result, not the method. Director of Safety Grace Nakamura points to three practices that matter: written pre-task plans completed by the crew before each shift, universal stop-work authority and a critical-lift review process that includes the rigging engineer, the crane operator and the signal person.

"Every year we examine our near misses and ask which controls failed," Nakamura said. "In 2025, the most common root cause was not an unsafe act. It was a pre-task plan that was completed without anyone physically walking the work area. So we changed the form, and the walk-around is now required before signing."

The company also invests in training, with every employee completing at least 10 hours of safety training annually and field supervisors completing OSHA 30. Owners can review the statistics, the as-of date and supporting documentation on our safety page.
